After breakfast I made my way over to see Jimmy Mack, a virtually retired fisherman who lives in the neighbouring cottage here at Risky Point. There’s just the two of us on this isolated cliff top on the Cleveland coast. Our cottages used to be part of a hamlet peopled by ironstone miners and fishermen and their families, but coastal erosion has taken away all but Jimmy’s place and mine. One day it will likely take ours, too, as we both know full well. We live dangerously at Risky Point, like a few other people on the Cleveland coast. So you were right about the snow, Ji.

This series looks at jobs which involve a high element of danger. Through colour photographs, anecdotes and fact boxes, each book focuses on the risks involved in a dangerous occupation, with detailed information on the rigorous training that prepares men and women for the kinds of risks they will face. The authors aim also to show that discipline, commitment and professionalism are essential qualities. This book looks at the work of civil and military pilots, describing the process of becoming a pilot and examining in detail the job of a military test pilot. It provides anecdotal information about earlier generations of test pilots, some of whom lost their lives, as well as those who risk their lives today. Also explored are the dangers of flying fire-fighting aircraft in Europe, USA and Australia, and aspects of flying naval fighter planes, and a chapter has been included on the role of women pilots in the US Navy.
