The Land I Lost: Adventur. has been added to your Cart. I couldn't put this book down, and now that my 9 year old is reading it he can't either. It is an autobiographical story written from Quang Nhuong Huynh's childhood in the jungle of Vietnam. What struck me the most about this book was the author's deep connection to all generations of his family (mother, father, sister, grandmother, cousin) and his extensive knowledge of the natural world in which he lived. I learned so much about so many creatures I have never encountered. I kept wishing the book had been longer. Quang Nhuong Huynh lead such an interesting life.

Quang Nhuong Huynh; Vo-Dinh Ma. This book was about a boy telling about his village and the people of it.

This book is about a boy and the life he had in Vietnam before the war hit his village. Every chapter has a story about people and the relationship they have with animals around them. The stories talk about water buffaloes, snakes, monkeys, otters, wild hogs, dogs, and birds. Some of them are pretty sad and include some violence, so I suggest this book for kids who are older than eight. Other stories in this were really funny and my sons really loved learning the stories.

content warning: There is a scene where a man is smoking opium and even talk about animals being given it to soothe them and control them.

This is a realistic look at life in Vietnam before the war, and some of the stories are very touching, but it also includes some gruesome and terrifying tales of animal cruelty and the dismemberment of a small child.

Quang Nhuong Huynh lead such an interesting life. I would like to know more about his adult life and army service with the South Vietnamese. Sadly, that will not be possible (even though he has several unpublished pieces), as I found that he died in 2001.

For those parents who don't review books before their children read them, you may want to know that opium is mentioned in the book. It was not at all offensive, actually quite interesting. But I wanted mention this in case your children start asking questions about opium.

My son and I totally enjoyed this book. Thank you Quang Nhuong Huynh for writing down your unforgettable experiences. This is one of the few books we have decided to keep from our homeschool curriculum.

Exciting stories. Teachers here in Vietnam love it. Many say it reminds them of their childhood.

Although the life of the mountain people in Vietnam was generally described in an interesting, informative way, the cruelty shown to various non-human creatures would keep me from giving this book to children under the age of 15. The reading level is for much younger readers.
Ordered it for my son's class reading, arrived fast, very happy
