I bought this, and several other, graphic novels for my 7- and 10-year-old boys. They LOVE graphic novels (such as the Tin Tin and Bone series), so I thought I might introduce them to classic characters and stories this way. Ali Baba was the first one they both read. They had never heard of him before! They really enjoyed this book. My older son is a reluctant reader, but he finished this book in record time!

Gift for grandkids - they like visual language and high adventure stories. I like the myths being introduced at such a young age -elementary school ages.

This story is one of many in the Arabic classic, “The Thousand and One Nights.” Ali BABA and the forty thieves is a tale which has been popular throughout the ages. There has even been a movie about this particular story many years ago. I had read this classic about 60 years ago and when I saw this graphic novel version (Ali BABA: Fooling the forty thieves: an Arabian tale: story by Marie P. Croall, Pencils and ink by Clint Hilinski) on Amazon, I immediately purchased it. I was glad it was the hardcover edition of this graphic novel.

The story begins with Ali BABA seeing some thieves approach a stone wall. When the leader said the words “Open Sesame” the wall slid open and the criminals put many bags of gold inside. When they finished putting the gold inside the leader said “Shut Sesame” and the stone wall closed. From here the tale gets more complex and interesting. This graphic novel is organized into six parts. Ali BABA and the forest, inside the cave, Kasim and his wife, Morgiana and the tailor, the Captain’s plan, and Morgiana’s dance. There is also a glossary and pronunciation guide, and further reading and websites, and an index section. The drawings and graphics are also fantastic.

If you like graphic novels and this Arabian tale of Ali BABA fooling the forty thieves, you should check out this publication.
