My middle son was about seven and having a lot of trouble learning how to read when we bought one of the books in this series at a book fair. The words aren't easy, but, since it's a comic book format, he could understand what was going on without knowing all the vocabulary. I tell you, he read the first one over and over, till he must have known it by heart.
We had always read to him, and he liked other books (Dr. Seuss, etc.), but we had to force him to read them on his own. This series he loved enough to really break through and develop that curl-up-somewhere-quiet-and-read habit, and since then we've just watched his smoke.
The illustrations are very vivid and realistic, and the stories taken very seriously (unlike the silly Disney-type versions), which children appreciate more. I would recommend this book for kids up to even 11 or 12.
Like they say, every child can be a reader if you just find the subject that he's interested in. For my son, this -- and, I have to admit, Archie comics -- did the trick.

I will admit, upon first glance at this tome, the price stymied my meager finances. However, something ...compelled... me to click the 'buy now' button, and though I tried, I could not resist the siren call from across the interwebs. I threw caution to the winds and confirmed my order. Upon the book's arrival I forsook all worldly connections in order to delve into the mysteries therein. And what a world I found! I found myself within these mystical pages a doorway to another realm. One in which a land in turmoil cried out for a hero. It was a time when gods were petty and merciless, and monsters walked the land. I found myself thrust into the heat of battle, sword in hand, to deal out justice to those who would harm the innocent. I spent many years within this world, battling ancient Gods, Warlords and Kings in a Lawless land. My plucky sidekick Gabrielle and I crossed the world righting wrongs...and eventually I grew to love the girl as my greatest friend (and perhaps more, if one knows how to read between the lines). Eventually, the magic of the book's hidden doorway began to wear away, and I was transported back to this one. Had it all happened? Was this ancient and magical place real? Would I ever see my beloved Gabrielle again? Alas, I have not yet found the answer to these maddening questions. Now, I search the globe for another way to enter this parallel world. I will not rest until I have found her again.
