When Penguin snuggles deep into Ellen's pocket because he's scared, Ellen, too, can be seen clinging close to her mother; when Ellen's too shy to join in at the playground (and too encumbered by Penguin to catch a ball), it's Penguin who wants to go home. In the end, Penguin helps make a bridge to another shy, quiet child and her toy monkey. Vulliamy, who illustrated Anne Fine's Poor Monty (1992), again exhibits her mother Shirley Hughes's affectionate perspicacity toward the child's world while bringing her own special insight to their intimate emotions

As in Ellen and Penguin (Candlewick, 1993) she attributes her own feelings to her stuffed toy, allowing her to work through her jealousy more easily. When Ellen can't sleep, for example, she walks Penguin around, patting his back. The illustration shows her mother walking and patting the baby at the same time, clearly implying that Ellen wishes her mother were holding her instead. After baby's presence ruins their fun on several occasions, Mom asks Ellen to try and cheer him up.

Ellen shares everything with her beloved stuffed animal, Penguin, even her shyness over joining the other children at their tea party, until she meets Jo and her stuffed monkey companion, Bill.
