When the children went to the zoo, they spent all day lookin. Jan Ormerod grew up in the small towns of Western Australia, with three older sisters, and as a child she drew constantly and compulsively. One line covers two pages, with a large illustration framed by many smaller illustrations. The inner covers have a map of the zoo. The animals are pictured showing many different behaviors. She went to art school and studied drawing, painting and sculpture.
Via one family's visit, an introduction to 20 varied animals and to the zoo itself. Although the idea is hardly new, Ormerod's skillful composition and deft draftsmanship make this an unusually attractive book for small children. On each double spread, a single species is shown in several different positions and/or activities, providing both a fuller sense of the animal and a pleasingly rhythmic design. An endpaper map adds to the experience.

When Jan Ormerod takes a family to the zoo, they sing "hi-de-hi-de-ho, the elephant is so slow. They see a pelican yawn. They laugh at an orangutan in a paper bag. But in the end, what they like best isn"t a zoo animal at all. It"s the simple, special sight of sparrows building a nest. The glowing illustrations make a trip to the zoo something to be remembered. Full-color illustrations.
