I want a hippopotamus for Christmas I don't think Santa Claus will mind, do you? He won't have to use our dirty chimney flue Just bring him through the front door That's the easy thing to do. I can see me now on Christmas morning Creeping down the stairs Oh what joy and what surprise When I open up my eyes To see a hippo hero standing there. I want a hippopotamus for Christmas Only a hippopotamus will do No crocodiles, no rhinoceroses I only like hippopotamuses And hippopotamuses like me too.

by John Rox & illustrated by Bruce Whatley. An unnamed little girl in pink pajamas is the first-person narrator, explaining in detail why she wants a hippopotamus as her present. Various views of the hippo are shown in a slightly confusing, nonlinear time sequence, but then why would time proceed in a straightforward fashion with a hippo in the house? Santa is shown pushing the hippo through the door, and the following pages show the little girl caring for her hippo, unwrapping it as a Christmas package (a different packaging treatment is shown on the cover), and then flying off with Santa as the hippo pulls the sleigh.

My 4 and 2-year-old grandson love the pictures in this book and it really brings that song to life for them. It is a loving and fun book. Turns out Hippos need love too. If you get this book, get ready for singing. It is almost impossible to just read the words.

Adorable book and true to the lyrics. I bought this book along with a purple stuffed hippo like the one pictured for my daughter for Christmas and I can't wait for her to open them! Illustrations are great and I love that the little girl in the story is a brunette. Will treasure this for years to come!

Beautiful book of the song put to pictures. Only two lines added that are not in the song. My 4 year old granddaughter is very happy with it.

Purchased for our granddaughter to accompany the Cuddly 16 in. stuffed hippopotamus. She loves the illustrations in the book and enjoys the story. Her eyes got very big at the size of the hippo as depicted in the book. She laughed at the thought of an animal that large in the house.

I bought this for my youngest niece since she repeatedly requested a hippopotamus for Christmas from me. So, I found this book on Amazon and immediately ordered it for her. My order came quickly and in good condition I was super excited! The book is adorable! I do not recall the one particular part in the book where the little girl is talking about cleaning her hippo in the garage as being apart of the song but, I am no expert and it's cute none the less. The illustrations are great! I laughed hysterically at the majority of them! I enjoyed the book very much and I am excited to give my niece this book for Christmas :-)
