I've been working my way through all the original Tom Swift books and it's become a heck of a slog. Initially I really enjoyed the stories and found it fascinating to read tales from the early 20th century but as time went on the books became extraordinarily formulaic and repetitive. I often find it a struggle to find anything new or unique about a Tom Swift story. Tom Swift stories come in two varieties, the invention story and the rare treasure hunt. This time around Tom Swift has teamed up with Professor Bumper from the previous story to try and find a lost city in Nicaragua and a massive golden idol. Muddying the waters is a rival (because EVERY SINGLE Tom Swift story has a rival). The difference this time is that Tom actually knows who the rival is. Not only is the rival trying to be the first to locate the lost city but young Professor Beecher is also attempting to win Mary Nester's heart.

For me, Mary Nester is the most frustrating part of the Tom Swift series. She is the most obvious opportunity for series to evolve but their relationship never goes anywhere. She might as well hook up with Beecher since Tom seems to be doing absolutely nothing.

The imagined machines gave the book charm. The writing itself felt hurried. The plot was straight forward. The characters flat. The biases of times, so different from our age, are very distracting from the story.

Excellent novel for those who like adventure.

Still a good book, but when I was 10 it was even better, but for a trip down memory lane it is what it is.
