Catch and release is a practice within recreational fishing intended as a technique of conservation. After capture, the fish are unhooked and returned to the water. Often, a fast measurement and weighing of the fish is worthwhile. Using barbless hooks, it is often possible to release the fish without removing it from the water (a slack line is frequently sufficient).

John Pierce reflects on three decades of fly fishing near his family’s rustic retreat in Idaho’s Selkirk Mountains in Catch and Release, a collection of essays mapping the author’s meandering route through joy and tragedy toward self discovery. Pierce explores sensitive territory, sharing the story of his son’s battle with Hodgkins lymphoma and melanoma and how it affected his family.
