Most NPS personnel are very dedicated and sacrifice a great deal over a long period of time. The federal bureau can be too political and abusive at times and it is hard for those outside the system to understand what sacrifices individuals within the system constantly make - and constantly get abused from within for attempting to do a good job. The NPS is hard on individuals and marriages. Alcoholism and divorce rates are high. Families live in isolation and are often "paid in sunsets" while still having to spend money on dentists, transportation and deal with the whims of politicians.

Good read. It was very frustrating to see how far some of the NPS managers would go to lie, cover up, and then overtly waste taxpayers' money and abuse a good ranger just to put pressure on him to quit and be quiet. I am so glad that Danno persevered. It shows what happens when agencies don't follow their own policies.

This is a real eye opening look into the National Park Service. I live in a National Historic Park and I know first hand how true that Mr. Danno was treated. I have seen it here and it is not pleasant. I have huge admiration for him and I have had contact with people who have talked with him. He is honorable and it is disgusting to see how someone has been treated as he has. Read and be informed!

Mr. Danno is a personal friend and I wanted the book as a keep sake.

there are spots where it really reads like a young man tooting his own horn....but he does show his expertise.

Very insightful reading regarding the power and influence that the rich and powerful
have regarding the politics of conservation in the U.S. today.

If you need another reason to hate Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington NFL team, read this book. It tells the sad story of a federal whistleblower, but it also gives you a real appreciation for the skills, knowledge, and responsibilities of our national park service rangers.
Very well written book and is a must read to really understand the inner workings of one of our largest national services and how it has evolved. A great primer for the public to instigate change in Washington D.C. and move back to the original vision of one of the largest federal agencies in the U.S.
