Earlier in life he worked as an entertainer - tap-dancing, playing the trumpet, and doing comedy routines - and he died of lung cancer (despite never having smoked) in 1994. The last part of the book is in diary form, after his first diagnosis of cancer, with treatment that worked, followed by a recurrence that lead to his demise shortly after the book was completed.

Fred Secombe (brother). Sir Harry Donald Secombe, CBE (8 September 1921 – 11 April 2001) was a Welsh comedian and singer. He played Neddie Seagoon, a central character in the BBC radio comedy series The Goon Show (1951–60). His elder brother, Fred Secombe, was the author of several books about his experiences as an Anglican priest and rector. With the success of The Goon Show, Secombe developed a dual career as both a comedy actor and a singer. At the beginning of his career as an entertainer, his act would end with a joke version of the duet Sweethearts, in which he sang both the baritone and falsetto parts.

This autobiography of Roy Castle provides a frank, vivid and often funny account of Castle's life on and off stage. He describes his happy childhood and of the heyday of variety theatre, working with for example, Sir Harry Secombe, Eric Morecambe and Jimmy James. Also featured is his 22-year stint in "Record Breakers" in which his feats included the 400-foot death slide from the top of Blackpool Tower and the three-hour, 23-minute "wing walk" from Gatwick to Le Bourget in Paris. When his life was shattered by the surprise diagnosis of lung cancer (he never smoked but attributed his cancer to trumpet-playing in smoky venues), his public struggle gained him admiration. This book contains the diaries from these years in which he speaks honestly about his family and religious faith. Roy Castle died in September 1993.
