Patrick Hamilton, author of Rope and Gaslight, had a life full of strange contradictions. This book qua biography is an improvement on Nigel Jones' earlier attempt. He came from a family of powerful literary failures. The major source is still Hamilton's correspondence with his brother Bruce, so not a lot of new details are added, but French is a better writer and his understanding of some of Hamilton's relationships (including with Bruce) seems more cogent. However, French's literary judgements are unsatisfactory.
