This is a very well written family account on the fate of a Jewish family from Northern Transylvania. The Mandel family was deported from the ghetto of Kolozsvár (Romanian name: Cluj), in spring 1944. Out of three sisters only Judith, the author of this book, managed to survive. Though the historic data contained in the book are often inaccurate, the family history is conveyed to the reader in an exciting manner. I can highly recommend it, with the recommendation of not relying on the general history information.

As a child of a holocaust survivor, I found this book riveting. Without being too graphic which makes many holocaust books difficult to read, this story is about the loss of family and the ability to survive. It is well written yet simple and from the heart, and I felt that the author was speaking to me telling her story of how she survived the war and how she remained emotionally connected to her family and her religious beliefs. While my parents rarely spoke about their childhood or war experiences, I felt this story could have been theirs and I so appreciated learning more and empathizing with the author. I only have praise and appreciation for Judith Novack for relating her story to us in a most meaningful way.
