The Belles Heures (Book of Hours) of the Duke of Berry (southern France), in private possession until 1954, is much less well known that the 'Tres Riches Heures. Also, painted (illuminated) by three Limbourg Brothers, The Belles Heures contains superlative qualities no longer visible in its famous successor. I was familiar with the Tres Riches Heures the Duc de Berry commissioned and with the Grandes Heures but not with this treasure of a book. The original must be amazing. The Tres Riches Heures" is the most luxurious and most famous examples of manuscript illumination in late medieval Europe. Commissioned by the influential patron, Jean de Berry, in the early years of the fifteenth century, this masterpiece was executed by the three Limbourg brothers, the greatest miniaturists of the time. Their beautifully presented texts are accompanied by lush illustrations, in which the artists' imaginative and decorative genius are fully revealed.
The Belles Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry, is among its direct ancestors. But a sad coarsening took place in its repetition of earlier illuminations as well as a sad reduction in force when one of its three main illuminators turned to Flemish panel painting as a source to imitate. These esthetic flaws are inherent in the manuscript's historical position and are the very reason why its dissemination in facsimile has educational value.
