As part of SPORTEL 2006, the 9th Illustrated Sports Book Prize was awarded on Tuesday evening at the Golden Podiums ceremony. As for Planète football, this is the work of two Spanish photographers, Andoni Canela and Rodolfo Chisleanschi, who have travelled the world tracking down goalmouths: two poles and a crossbar. An absolute gem! A reference prize.

Soccer is a truly global passion, and nothing encapsulates the spirit of the game better than grassroots soccer. Wherever there are t-shirts for goalposts and an old can for kicking, kids will play. The images portray a game that is a million miles away from Old Trafford or the Bernabau, a game uncorrupted by the sportswear marketing gurus or the tantrums of star players. The result is a brilliant visual celebration of the most popular sport on the planet.

In spite of the authors' credentials, this book could have been so much more. When you come up with an all-encompassing title such as Planet Football - there's an expectation that there's going to be a lot of variation, and a whole host of countries. What results, however, seems to be a limited number of photographs of football almost as an opportunistic sideline to a number of vacations or other photo assignments.
Leaving the quality of the photos aside - there are a number of blurry and grainy images included - the number of countries included is somewhat limited. And even when nations are included, sometimes there is a great similarity to the shots. Take England - four photos in and around London of empty, waterlogged park pitches. There are three photos from Hawaii - none of the other American states, Canada or Mexico.
In Asia, only three countries are represented.
In Europe, there are just eight, with Spain making up almost a half of the photos - hardly surprising given one of the authors is from that nation. In Africa, Tanzania, Morocco and Malawi warrant five photos apiece - the rest of the continent a mere four combined. While FIFA has over 200 nations playing the game, only 32 are represented here.
Some of the photos are, admittedly, excellent and interesting.
Others, however, are simply repetitious. Animals walking across pitches, overgrown or waterlogged fields. People playing football with a few backdrops. There are scant few women playing.
For the most part, this comes across as a side project: had this book been the main attraction, surely the authors could have travelled a bit within some of these countries - and to many more nations - and obtained photos that showed a far more varied spectrum of the beautiful game. Had it been called A Few Snaps of Football in Places I Have Visited, it may - although even then only just - have met expectations.

The pictures in this book are amazing. Everyone who sees it has nothing but admiration and wants to know where I found it.
