Works, 1983-1993 book. Andres Serrano worked at an advertising firm for six months. Anyway, Wendy Steiner, author of one of the book's essays, recognizes the tension between form and content in Serrano's work. The tension between form and content has been hugely important in my own life as I've gone along in day to day mundaneness, interacting with other fellow humans. In maybe the past 15 years I've become more interested in people both in everyday life and in art and photography. His experience there help teach him how to make slick, formally beautiful, sellable images.

Andres Serrano (born August 15, 1950) is an American photographer and artist who has become famous through his photos of corpses and his use of feces and bodily fluids in his work, notably his controversial work Piss Christ, a red-tinged photograph of a crucifix submerged in a glass container of what was purported to be the artist's own urine. He is also notable for creating the artwork for the heavy metal band Metallica's Load and Reload albums.

In his art, Serrano deals with bodily fluids in large Cibachromes that question the realistic claims made for photography; at the same time, they portray these feared substances with the seductive allure usually reserved for advertising.

Andres Serrano: The Body Politic ROBERT HOBBS I Terry Gross. In his art, Serrano deals with bodily fluids in large Cibachromes that question the realistic claims made for photography; at the same time, they portray these feared substances with the seductive allure usually reserved for advertising. Thus, his work unites culturally constructed codes for desire with substances usually considered repugnant in Western culture. Marginalized by his African Cuban background, Serrano has made images of such outsider groups as the homeless and the Ku Klux Klan.

This exhibition catalogue for Serrano's show at the ICA in Philadelphia features 3 essays and 35 plates. The essays are well written, and a pleasure to read due to the (unfortunately) rare format of having each work described in the text also in thumbnail form on the same page. Each of the large format plates (printed one to a page) is printed in lavish color and touches on each of the various 'series' Serrano produced from '83 to '93, which include the body fluids, the Nomads, the Klansmen, the Church, etc.

If you are looking for beautiful, large format pictures of this period of Serrano's career, then this is the book for you. More plates are always better, but until a more definitive monograph is produced, this slim volume will more than suffice.
