Jazz, Giants and Journeys: The Photography of Herman Leonard Hardcover. This book contains many of the first images that Herman produced after he came out of retirement in the 70s. They represent a magnificent example of the astonishing ability of Herman to print difficult negatives and create a masterpiece out of what for most others would be a reject. There was never a doubt that Herman was the great capturer of 'the perfect shot' but this, combined with his sheer darkroom skills and ability, make almost every picture in the book an iconic representation of the Jazz photo.

I gave this book to my brother for Christmas. He is a professional trumpet player and concentrates on pure jazz. All of his jazz idols were in this book. He even enjoyed the other photos that were not related to the jazz profession. He knew of this photographer immediately because of his reputation for photographing jazz greats. Every other page, he would say to us, "look at this!" So it would appear that anyone connected to the jazz world would really appreciate this photo book.

Looking for a gift for a jazz lover, photography buff or international

traveler? Look no farther. JAZZ, GIANTS AND JOURNEYS: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF

HERMAN LEONARD is a mind-blower. The meticulously detailed photos of jazz

greats like Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Billie Holliday, Quincy Jones and

others recreate the essence of an era so well that the viewer can actually

see, hear and smell the flavor of the 40's and 50's NY jazz venues where

the musicians played. Included in this wonderful book is a photo of the

great Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, taken in 1970, long before they

were blown up by the Taliban. This alone makes the book vital.

I bought this book for a gift of a jazz lover but this book was more about all the photography from Herman Leonard. He had many subjects that were not for jazz lovers!
Fantastic pictures. Prompted me to look further into maybe purchasing some of the authors works. Didn't

get past the first picture because of the price. Bood makes him sound like a jazz lover. Prices make

him look like a capitalist greed monger. Amazon was right on time, as usual.
