Jan van Huysum, Still life of fruit on a marble plinth, 1736 Delft, Stedelijk Museum Het Prinsenhof. No other artist has matched either his technical virtuosity or his ability to create luxuriant arrangements of fruit and flowers. His fame derives in great measure from the realism with which he could convey such microscopic details as the veins of individual petals, the filaments of calyxes, drops of water, and insects. His style was widely emulated, and his influence on flower and fruit painters persisted until well into the nineteenth century

According to Van Gool, Van Huysum was so secretive that he refused to take on any students until Daniël Haverman’s eloquence led him to admit Margareta as a Discipeles (disciple). According to the biographer Haverman’s tireless zeal and diligence soon led her not only to copy paintings but to paint beautifully from life; even to the amazement of connoisseurs, who came to see her work (Van Gool 1751, vol. 1, pp. 32–33). I recently visited the Getty Museum in LA and admired all the paintings by Titian, Van Dyck, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet and others, but I kept returning to marvel at two paintings by an artist I knew little about, a Dutch floral artist working in the 1700s named Jan Van Huysum. His hyper-real flower & fruit paintings are just exquisite! Such fine definition of form and color, and all gracefully flowing across the canvas.
I had to learn more and so I picked up "The Temptation of Flora". It is an excellent compendium of Jan Van Huysum's paintings. The floral paintings are all included in this book, which is profusely illustrated with full page reproductions of the paintings and has a lengthy commentary on each piece. The reproduction quality is good, but some are better than others, with some areas of color too blown out, or too dark. Having seen the originals, these reproductions suffer by comparison, although I don't think any camera or printing process could capture the subtlety of Van Huysum's work.
The author has gathered up what little information is available on Van Huysum and consolidated it in this book. It is very thorough, including information on his family, teachers, followers, influence, and technique. It even has a key to many of the paintings that lists every species of flower and insect included in the scene. If you want to learn more about this artist, this is by far the best book available.

I've searched everywhere for this out of print book. The condition of this used book was so much better than I had expected from the written description!
