This is the best knife painting book I have found so far. It is written in a very conversational and engaging manner. The author is a painter who prefers knife painting and he has a way of energizing you to just get out there and do it. This book goes through types of painting knives, different strokes, paint mixing, types of surfaces to paint on, preparing an outdoor painting setup and a lot more. My copy is an old library book, it has paint in it and the pages are worn and a lot of dog ears but it is worth it's weight in gold in what it has enabled me to do with painting knives

If one is serious about learning the hows and whens and what types of palettes knives to use to make a painting look great, this is the book I recommend. It was recommended to me by an instructor who is a palette knife painter. Coulton Waugh wrote in an easy to understand manner. Since following some of the instructions shared by Coulton, my palette knife painting is becoming more of a nature type of painting for me.

Colton Waugh is one of my favorite artists, his work, and his wonderful engaging writing surpass all the modern day painting books. His work is original, technique and explanation of how to execute the knife work is not equaled. If you knife paint, find Colton Waugh's books, they are worth the time and money.

I love his style, straightforward and to the point, and yet he uses humor throughout. He makes reading about how-to fun, which in my experience is unusual. Most how-to art books are tedious and rather boring. He gives many tips on composition, color and also really teaches the ways to use the knife in painting.

If you have his first book a lot of the material is repeated here. But if you are strictly into landscapes then this would be the better of the two.

Landscape Painting with a Knife covered everything I needed to know about tools, easels, tip and tricks. Very well written and easy to understand. I wish there were more color pics, but I reallize that makes a more expensive book. I love it and refer to it often.
