In his book, David Malo described how Liloa originated the practice of moe āikane, the sexual relationship between males . Umi-a-Līloa was a ruling aliʻi ai moku (district high chief of Hawai'i). The relationships had no social stigma and were accepted practice beginning with the aliʻi and then copied by the other classes. Warriors engaged in the practice. The relationships cannot be defined as bisexuality. He became chief after the death of his half brother Hākau and was considered a just ruler, religious and the first to unite almost all of the Big Island

So today we're going a little more mainstream after yesterdays sojourn into art history, with 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - by Stieg Larsson'. After finishing the first book I went straight out and got the other two in the trilogy and they were just the same, as thrillers they have you on the edge of your seat and compelled to keep reading.

A mid-career retrospective of Gary Reed, Hawai'i's most renowned landscape artist. His oils on canvas of the Islands over the past three decades are beautifully presented in this deluxe 10.5" by 13" book. The story is told in his words ... growing up on a small farm in Woodstock, Illinois ... discovering art in high school ... adventures in art school ... and moving to Hawai'i and starting his career at 22. The focused determination to succeed as an artist rings through these pages, as does Gary's constant honing of technique and exploration of undiscovered--and unspoiled--corners of the Islands to paint. Each image of his paintings (104 were selected) is captioned by the artist as to why he painted it.

The book is fascinating for those who love the Islands, but beyond it offers inspiration to young artists--perhaps still in school--that they CAN carve out a career in art.

With color images on all but two pages. Individually shrinkwrapped, with 4/c dust jacket.

I love this book so much, I bought three prints and they are framed and hanging in the hallway so that guests cannot miss them. I spent three weeks on the Hawaiian Islands, and this book takes me right back to the islands. I showered with the geckos, caved with the bats, and attended a luau with my best friend. I distinctly remember climbing a mountain through the mist and would have walked right off the mountain had I not decided to look down at my feet and saw the white sails of the ships below in clear blue water. Beautiful and exquisite book. If you are a collector, collect this one. Aloha!

A truly stunning book. I lived in Hawaii for 15 years, and Reed's paintings evoke some of my best memories. This is the Hawaii that tourists rarely see: the vistas of the Pali cliffs that you see on a hike along a little-known trail; the sleepy rural settings illuminated with the light of early morning. While thumbing through this book I could feel the soft, fragrant air, and remember laguid days of exploration.
Reed's landscapes have a strong emotional undertone that goes beyond his skillful representation of real scenes.
Buy this book for a wonderful mid-winter trip to paradise!

His realism is superb in the classic sense. He is one of very few artists who can capture intricate detail with shade and color. His paintings are so true-to-life that it sometimes takes a second look to realize that they are actually a work of art, and not a photograph. His subject matter, often scenes of the Hawaiian Islands, holds great meaning for those of us who live here, and he's one of the very best interpreters of our state's beauty. This book gives Gary's fans a fuller appreciation of his art, and the work that goes into the paintings.

Flipping through Gary Reed's book is like taking a walk through the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Every painting captures the magical setting of the lush mountains, waterfalls and local landscapes. He takes you to places in his art that your own feet can't find. I have not seen an artist recreate the Hawaiian landscape as nature intended it to be better than Gary Reed. His book allows you to see the Old Hawaii, no skyscrapers, highways or hotels. Gary Reed's paintings are Hawaii.

Gary Reed's paintings exudes talent, inspiration, and his love for the art. He paints with passion and is able to capture all of it, whether it be a landscape, people, or an inanimate object. He's a true artist with endless talent.
