It wasn't what I expected, which is probably my fault for not spending more time reading the description. The exercises are mostly simple, although some are useful to me. It really depends on the level of the person. I'm an intermediate level amateur musician and find it mostly simple, with some exceptions. It could be a good book for beginner levels but it's not clear that learning in this way is useful when a student will naturally be exposed to these ideas as needed and at a time where the information is useful and easily remembered and applied.

Exactly what I needed for my class. I just wish I had purchased the book instead of renting since there are a lot worksheets in the book that we do in class and I have to do it on a separate piece of paper just would be easier to write in the book.

I'm a 50 plus beginning piano student. As with many instructors, my piano teacher teaches mostly kids and is probably frustrated with my inability to grasp theory as quickly as her much younger students. I purchased this book and found it to be very easy to use. The authors build on previous concepts and the student is quized multiple times before the next concept is introduced. This book is my go-to tool to review and reinforce any concepts my teacher addresses. I feel I have a much better understanding of basic theory and will be purchasing the more advanced books by these authors as I progress.

Item is in much better shape than expected for a book marked “good.” It was almost “like new.” The book is exactly what I expected. It does a good job of teaching concepts, little by little with frequent review, and building upon the previous topics. So far, I like it very much. I do wish there were a children’s book on this topic, something with more pictures and bright colors, but I’m a first-grade teacher, so maybe that influences me!

Excellent book that teaches the foundation of the language of music. Clearly presented so that someone with no musical understanding can gradually become fluent in the essentials.

I have passed music theory exams prior to using these books, but have never been fully happy with my understanding; especially in the more complex usage of chromatism. Having used these books for a while, I believe them to provide and impart the best understanding of Classical Western music theory for harmony, part writing and voice leading available, I have many other music theory books, most are very good, but this series is far superior to any other.

However, it is limited in terms of practical music writing required for diploma and degree exams, so though they cover the theory elements very well, for practical work I would recommend getting a good workbook, here I would recommend getting the ABRMS or Trinity College publications, available via their web sites or their distributors.

I would recommend all the books, Basics, Programmed Course 1 & 2, and excellent bridge to 20th Music and Contrapuntal Techniques.

Sadly like most college level text books they are expensive!

It served it's purpose. I just needed it to get me through a refresher course. The book did have the first chapter or so filled in with pen (correct and incorrect answers). Once I got past that first section there was pencil, then nothing at all. No audio CD, but that wasn't necessary for this course. Nice content and an easy to follow book for beginners and advanced musicians alike.
We use this book in my college introduction to music theory course. It is a fantastic book. If you do not know how to read music but want to learn how to or you need to refresh your memory, this is the book for you.
