Morgan Delancey, a freelance writer from California, wrote the first book on life behind the scenes and called it Dave Matthews Band: Step Into the Light (signaling an unreleased solo song by the same name).

Lie in Our Graves" is a song by the Dave Matthews Band, featured on the 1996 album Crash. Lie in Our Graves" is a song about reunion in death ("When I step into the light, My arms are open wide") and the singer's hopes that the afterlife will be joyful and without regrets ("I can't believe that we would lie in our graves, Wondering if we had spent our living days well")

This book is a great look into the odd combination of factors that happened as the stars aligned in just the right time to make the Dave Matthews Band. It did indeed take a lot of talent and even more hard work and personal sacrifice to get to where they are today. I enjoyed reading about the different band members backgrounds and families. I learned about how one should not trust lawyers, even those that are close friends, when success comes your way. I learned about the loving, religious background that influences the lyrics and sound of the band, and the history of touring that built them into a multi-million dollar act. I will probably read this book again in a year or two to see how my perspective of this band changes after their new album Away From the World is released. This book is very well written, and the author has taken a complex subject and made it easier to understand.

I'm doing a work on Dave Matthews Band, and this book is just great! It has everything you need to know about the band, that it... until 2001, but never the less, a great source of information on the formation and carrer of the band!

Being the Dave Matthews Band fan I am, I bought this book....that was a huge mistake.....I have never read a more dull, mundane, tedious book about a musician in all my life. Ms. Delancey must have been writing this as her term paper for whatever college that had the misfortune of accepting her. There are no first hand accounts from the band members themselves. All that is here is a basic rehash of some magazine articles and stuff that any average joe who knows how to use a search engine can find...Needless to say...this "book" was a complete waste of the paper it was printed on...Trees were cut down for this???? Ms. Delancey, if you read this, do us all a favor and make this your first and last foray into the realm of "literature".

I've interviewed DMB for a magazine article a year ago and loved both the guys and their performance. I reviewed this biography for the same magazine, and I was shocked. Much to my chagrin, the book was the antithesis to the phenomenon that is the Dave Matthews Band. The biography lacks the spontaneity, excitement, and passion that the music of DMB has.
The book is nothing if not informative. It details their roots in Charlottesville, Virginia to their hectic recent touring. Delancey relates all of the facts, but omits the interesting stories, the snapshots of DMB life. The result is a boring, dry biography. This is surely the caused by Delancey's research methods; she does not interview the band and instead relies on previously published material. Only at the end of the book do we see examples of fine writing, and a high spirited account of the history of the DMB. Ironically this excellent material is an appendage, one article by Rolling Stone Magazine and another by the C'VILLE Weekly.
For anyone interested in learning more about the mechanics of DMB, this is a decent book to read. But as for the getting into the heads of the Dave Matthews Band, you would be better off saving your money and looking elsewhere.

This book is an intellectual masterpiece -for a third grader! Where did this guy learn to write? Honestly, I can't believe this Morgan kid actually found a publisher. I read quite a bit in my spare time. I couldn't even stand to finish his book.
A friend of mine recommended that I check out The Dave Matthews Band: Music for the People. Reluctantly, I did. It was great!
I did some research and found out that Nevin Martell is quite a writer. In fact, he used to work for one of my favorite labels -Atlantic Records. I was especially impressed with his gigographies and list of bootleg recordings. I highly suggest his book, The Dave Matthews Band: Music for the People.

Many people feel that music is more powerful than words alone. For those who are fans of the Dave Matthews Band, I am sure they would agree with the preceding statement. Step Into The Light, by Morgan Delancey, is an incredible biography of the Dave Matthews Band providing an amazing account of the band's hardships, along with its many accomplishments.
Step Into The Light is the story of the formation of the band and the continuing effects that the group has had on all its fans and the world. The band started out playing at local bars and frat houses, but is now one of the highest money grossing bands of the decade.
The author, Morgan Delancey, seldom uses any literary devices, but has a certain style of writing that makes you feel as if you have known the band members all of your life. He writes of the band members in such a personal way that it seems as if he has known each member since they were kids. Delancey uses many quotes from the band to describe situations that the band has faced. He even goes as far as describing the meaning and purpose of each song that the band has written.
I thought that Step Into The Light was an amazing book. I loved every part of it and found it very interesting. If you are a Dave Matthews fan, then this is the book for you. The book has no specific theme, but its message for its readers is that anyone can make it to "the top" as long as they work hard and are dedicated to what they do.
Anything you ever needed/wanted to know about DMB is in this book! After reading this book, one can fully appreciate and understand the dimensions of DMB lyrics and songs. It is an easy read for any fan. However, it tends to focus too much on Dave Matthews himself and not on other band members, all of whom are essential to the makeup and unique sound of the band. There were also too many references to other works included within the text. Definitely 5 stars for its informative content but 4 stars for its structure. All in all a good read for both fans and critics alike.
