A HANDY & HARDWEARING (laminated) attractive flute fingering reference chart which also incorporates several useful sections on

- Notation, briefly explaining some of the rudiments of flute playing and their terminologies
- Instrument Care eg assembly, cleaning and storage considerations
- Transposition
- Pitch System

I see it as being more ideally suited For Adult Beginners who prefer the touch and feel of quality and are willing to pay a little more for it, or teachers as a reference resource. It's durability & attractive artwork sets it apart. One -ve is that its illustrations are not as easy to follow.

Note however, most beginner books already come with their own detachable/non detachable Fingering Charts, usually on flimsy paper, which in a way would make this purchase redundant but for its superior durability. eg A New Tune A Day for the Flute Book 1 or the Omnibus Edition.

The ADVANTAGE this Fingering Chart has is that it is:

1) Easy to handle (not floppy, unlike it's paper counterparts) with a great quality feel to it which adults like.
2) "Waterproof". Cleanable if soiled and thus would remain pristine for many years to come
3) Durable - if you are a teacher this a big plus.
4) Beautifully presented.
5) Has the addition section on Notation & FluteCare.

Hopefully the student flutist would have progressed beyond the need to reference it past its useful life. Still a nice to have.

For the Advancing...
There is another more comprehensive book on Fingering, a classic, by James J. Pellerite, called, "Modern Fingering Guide for the Flute" which deals with the entire spectrum of fingering needs from the beginner through to the performer professional, starting with the basic through exploration of harmonics, trills, tremelos, quarter-tones, and special effects. A wealth of knowledge sourced from the author's experience as a professional flute player. For not a lot more money.

I am teaching myself how to play the flute (after a few weeks of lessons many years ago) and I couldn't have done it without this guide. It has big diagrams of each of the notes, showing which keys to press. It folds out into 3 sections so you can lay it next to your music book and check which fingerings you need to play the correct note. I found some of the beginning flute books to be lacking in this department. Either the diagrams of what keys to press are quite small, or they are scattered throughout the books so you'd have to keep searching for them. This is a great learning tool!

I needed a fingering chart as a handy reference during practice sessions and to add to the learning process as I attempt to become a doubler on flute. This chart is ideal for that purpose. The graphics are sharp, clear and easy to transfer from the page to the instrument. It's made from durable heavy paper stock and laminated to protect it from damage such as liquid spills and tears (as in rips, not crying). I keep it on my music stand when practicing as a reference and have become to rely on it. If you're looking for a good quality flute fingering chart, this is the one to buy.

I am a beginner... and this chart is a bit confusing. I actually dont really use it at all.... i just stick to what the instructor wants me to use, which is a little less complicated and easier in the learning process. Maybe for intermediates, it would be a good reference... but again I am a beginner and I dont use it much... so what does that say? Thanks, though.

I had stopped playing my flute for several years and had lost all of my material, so I decided to get this as a reference guide to help me begin playing again. I have to say, it is absolutely amazing. It's laminated, and very easy to read. There's not much else to say, because it is what it is. A fingering chart! It opens like a brochure. The fingering chart is on the inside. The back panel and left-side panel have a bit of information about music notations, instrument care, and the pitch system. A wonderful resource for all flutists!

This was a good purchase for me! It helped me familiarized more and for a beginner it will be a great addition for your reference.

Completely serves its purpose. I recommend purchasing this new updated version of the fingering chart because it is now a more durable laminate type of material. My last version was paper and after much practice is somewhat resembling an old pirates' map. This one will last much longer.
