Flerlage is a fantistic photographer who was a fixture on the South and West Side club scenes for a long time, and his photos capture something of the essence of the great performances that made the blues from the 20s to the 50s so exciting. Lots of cigarette smoke and sweat in these pictures - these clubs must have rocked!

In the book's brief bio of Flerlage, we learn he was driven not just by a good eye for photography but by a desire for racial equality and social justice. His book serves as a good reminder of Chicago in the 1960s, where efforts continue today to attain this equality, and live music still captivates listeners.
