Judy Carmichael (born November 27, 1957) is a Grammy-nominated jazz pianist and vocalist who is one of the few jazz pianists honored as a Steinway Artist. She specializes in a rare form of pre-1950s jazz, stride piano, a highly physical style of playing first made popular by Fats Waller. The music was long associated with big, powerful-mostly black-men, so when Carmichael first emerged on the scene as a young, thin, white, ex-beauty queen, it was a shock.

This is an impressive book as an introduction to stride piano. It reveals some of the patterns of play that you might not be able to figure out by just listening. So THAT'S how you make that sound!! The included disk is very important, because it shows that it is possible to play these transcriptions. I looked them over at first and it reminded me of the first time I started playing Chopin.
If you already play piano (beginner to intermediate) this book will be a real challenge. The use of the full piano keyboard (especially high note areas) takes you out of the old comfort zone. Some of the synchopations and rhythms are tricky to switch over to. And some of the fingering and hand stretches are more than a lot of people will be able to do. Couple this with the fact that most of these tunes are played fast, and they become hard to learn but can be used as showoff pieces.
The book has practice phrases for conquering the "hard" parts, and to give the idea of how the sounds should be done. I give Carmichael and the editors a lot of credit for making stride as easy as possible, but it remains a difficult style to learn.
Maybe Chopin is easier!

I rate it 3 stars because it give me an impression of method book. Besides, the CD is very good. If you are skill enough and your hands are big enough, you can play the stride piano.

Its music score, with some playing tips for each song. Some songs need stress the left hand fingers to play parallel ninth and tenth.
