Just as another reviewer experienced, once I cracked open this book I couldn't put it down. I can't say I was a huge fan of .38 Special, but certainly liked them enough to connect to this story. It gave me a new appreciation for their music and especially for their efforts. Being a rock star isn't as easy and fun as it looks. The book is very well written -- intelligent and engaging without being self-absorbed. But best of all, it really makes the connection between what it takes to succeed in rock music and in business. Aside from being a big lifelong fan of rock music, I was interested in this book as an entrepreneur and author of (shameless self-promotion alert!) No Brown M&M's!: And Other Entrepreneurial Lessons from over 300 Legends of Rock & Roll. Anyone who happens to be interested in entrepreneurship and rock music is almost guaranteed to love "JAM!"

As a business person and someone who manages people, this is sound, practical advice in an attractive, highly entertaining package. I recommend this book to anyone who manages multiple people, departments or works collaboratively. This book would be especially helpful to anyone who is new to management.

It's an easy read and keeps your attention from cover to cover. I enjoyed it!

"Interesting, Informative, and Insightful" are my "3 Is" to complement the "5 Rs" (i.e., Realize, Rehearse, Record, Recap, and Rock!) in the "Encore" chapter at the end of "Jam! Amp Your Team, Rock Your Business," by Jeff Carlisi and Dan Lipson. Please note that I might be a bit biased in my review of this book, because Jeff and I have been personal friends since high school. Jeff and I jammed together on many occasions, along with my brother Billy (the late, great keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd). So, when Jeff recounts those almost incredible - but sometimes hilarious, sometimes humiliating, and sometimes sad - stories about the early, "starving musician" days of 38 Special, I can tell you he is not exaggerating. I can also vouch for the fact that Jeff always had a great deal of business acumen, which really blossomed when 38 Special hit the big time. Unlike other Southern Rock musicians of that era, Jeff did not waste his money on "sex, drugs, and rock & roll" (well, maybe a bit), and was not taken in by slimy managers, lawyers, and accountants. He invested his new-found gains wisely, and consequently is still doing quite well financially, despite leaving 38 Special in 1997.

Now, for the real question: How will this book help YOUR business? Well, if you are in the entertainment business (e.g., music, movies, etc.), the applications are immediately apparent. But if you work in the world of large, three-piece-suit corporations, I think the applications are less relevant. However, if you manage a small-to-medium-sized business, you should find some useful tidbits in this book. I find the recurring themes of teamwork, communication, and collaboration to be especially helpful in this regard. After all, it was collaboration with Jim Peterick (of the band Survivor) - an outside consultant, in "business speak" - that inspired 38 Special to overcome musical inbreeding, venture outside the comfortable perimeter of Southern Rock, and produce the most popular songs of their career.

Finally, I should add that this book comes in very handy for putting your budgie down, especially if you do not have a gun to shoot it just above the beak, as usually specified. However, it is not quite as effective as "Webster's Unabridged Dictionary," which is much, much heavier. ;-)

I started reading and thought "this book is not for me..." 20 pages later I could not put it down. It was deceptive, I thought it would be a straight on music business book, but it was a well constructed, meaningful, useful and funny guide book. I am passing it around to all the guys in the band now and have folks at work ordering copies. Thank you Jeff and Dan for the best read I've had in quite a while. It felt almost sinful to enjoy a book I was using as reference, and now I'm spoiled. I'll want that for all the industry stuff I read :)

I read JAM in one sitting...couldn't put it down. If you have ANY interest in the real story behind how a great band is created, and how those same business disciplines can be used for any business endeavor, THIS is the book for you! The behind-the-scenes stories of the rock band, 38 Special, from a person who lived it, are fascinating and often humorous. The business lessons that are intertwined contain valuable lessons that anyone in business can use. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Honestly, once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. It is one of those rare books that flows so smoothly and easily that you just don't want to stop reading.
If you love rock n roll (and who doesn't?#, or have ever been in a band or dreamed of being in a band, you will be fascinated by the first-hand details of the inner-workings of one of the biggest and most respected bands to come out of the late 70's and 80's.
Having been a huge fan of the band, it was like living that time over again and seeing a whole different side of it besides the fame and fortune and seemingly non-stop party of it all. What seperates those who make it #and make a living at it) and those who don't is not purely being a virtuoso at your instrument; but rather a whole combination of things starting with hard work, drive and TEAMWORK. All of the same things that are necessary to running a successful business--whatever business it may be.
Being both a wanna-be-rocker and a fairly successful business owner myself, I have never come across a book that ties together all the things I love in such an interesting and entertaining way. And Jeff throws in a few one-liners that had me laughing out loud.
Buy the book, sit down in a comfy chair and get reading......you will be glad you did!
