Greg Koch is a great teacher and an amazing player. If you're unfamiliar, he's also an unrepentant goofball, which I can deal with.

This book is a series of lessons on various techniques that most guitar players of all levels could probably use practice on. Each chapter focuses on things like slides, bends, vibrato, bends with vibrato, double stops, etc. You get an exercise to practice, then a solo over a backing track. What I really like is that while the exercises are useful, the solo (transcribed) and rhythm guitar part (also transcribed) give you a lot to work with, as far as applying the techniques (the solos) over some really good rhythm parts. These aren't your basic one-finger shuffles and the like, they're fleshed out, useful, usable guitar parts. To me that's very helpful. So often lesson books just sort of "throw away" the backing track - Greg gives you a lot to review and work on with every chapter, using interesting chord voicings, for example, for the rhythm parts. He's not just banging away on bar chords. This is the kind of stuff I wish I'd learned when I was just starting out many, many years ago.

A great lesson book given in small, digestible chunks. Very useful stuff. I've been playing a long time and I'm finding plenty to work on.
JUST DO IT
I've been playing guitar on and off for 30 years. In the last year or so I stumbled across Greg Koch on Youtube and have become addicted to his videos. A great surprise was that I began to pick up little licks and insights while watching. I decided to pull the trigger on this book because I am revisiting the basic pentatonic shapes and wanted to see what insights Greg has on the subject. I haven't even put the DVD in the player, I have found 5 or 6 very useful things by browsing and have been working them into my repertoire. The book is very well written and I like the explanations. The tablature is clear and I feel like some secret info has been given to me and I already can hear it's affect in my improvisational playing. Thanks Greg!

I originally gave this book 2 stars because the material is not presented in the most logical, gradual progression. Also, at times I felt that Greg was just trying to show off his skills. But over time I have grown to benefit from this book, especially the exercises that accompany each chapter. As long as you are mainly interested in pentatonic scales, and have software (like the free version of Audacity) to slow down a few of the tracks, it is a good book.

If you want to dig in those old pentatonics this is the book for you. Greg Koch is a funny (and sometimes campy) guy but he is a serious educator and he loves to teach: this is an excellent book that gives you tips on soloing but also about rhythm playing. I think it goes really well with Tom Kolb's Soloing Strategies.

This has a great mix of lead and rhythm techniques. His simple explanations of chickin pickin and pinch harmonics were easy to follow. The book has helped my playing a lot, and I've got plenty of practicing left to do. Thank you Mr. Koch!
