Paul Wranitzky (1756-1808) was one of the most significant composers of instrumental music active in Vienna in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Yet aside from his singspiel Oberon, König der Elfen, his music is little known today, just over two hundred years after his lifetime. The present edition of his only sextets, a set of six published without opus number by Hoffmeister in Vienna around 1795, will help to fill this gap. These sextets for flute, oboe, violin, two violas, and cello are among his largest chamber works, both in terms of compositional scale and performing forces. The sextets can equally well be understood as orchestral music and are quite possibly arrangements of six of his symphonies. The works exhibit formal innovations, daring and witty harmonic language, great textural variety, and much attention to dynamics and articulation for varied expressive effects.
