Landon, the leading Haydn scholar and a Mozart authority as well, here scrutinizes each month and each creative feat of the composer's final year-reassessing the old myths, reporting all the recent developments in Mozart scholarship, and offering a few theories of his own. Mozart and his wife Constanze were not reckless about money, Landon contends; furthermore, the composer's income in 1791 was substantial-and included, contrary to myth, 200 ducats for The Magic Flute.

HC Robbins Landon writing about Mozart -- pretty much the gold standard for Mozart biography. This book takes Mozart's last year and puts it under a microscope. But rather than the "on March 23 Mozart did this" approach it dives into various subjects (writing the Magic Flute or Masonry, for example) and breaks them down in fine detail, trotting the evidence where it exists, speculating carefully (and with full disclosure) where it doesn't. All in all a typical expedition by Landon into Mozart: satisfying, myth-devouring and informative.

I re-read this book from time to time. It is so full of detail, beautifully constructed - and fascinating from the first to the last page.

During my most recent re-read of this wonderful book, page-by-page I played the works mentioned from a complete Mozart Edition of CDs - and so got to know some outstanding Masonic Music I'd not heard before.

A masterly text - I will read it yet again, soon.

This book was very well written. It held my attention, not only as to Mozart, but the background. The author has a great way of describing the area and people in detail. So glad I found this book that I've been searching for and had the opportunity to read it.
