MARLENE DUMAS’S STUDIO occupies an underheated, underfurnished ground-floor apartment on the southern side of Amsterdam. As she sat at her worktable one evening in late March, emptying a bottle of white wine and picking at a plate of almond pastries, she offered an image of contented Bohemianism. Beside her, a red vase held a bouquet of dead white tulips, and beyond an unusually tall window, dusk was gathering in a garden densely overgrown with weeds. In the Netherlands, people talk about the Dutch light in rapturous terms.

Marlene Dumas grew up in Stellenbosch but has lived and worked mainly in the Netherlands since 1975. Through her focus on the human figure, Dumas merges themes. In the same year, ‘Intimate relations’, Dumas’ first solo exhibition in South Africa illuminated Dumas’ concern with the ethics of representation so pertinent to this burgeoning democracy and exposed many to a talent they had not encountered.
The exhibition opens with Dumas’s earliest mature works from the late 1970s. While loosely chronological, it will also reflect Dumas’s tendency to work in series, with key paintings grouped together. This exhibition of the work of the acclaimed painter Marlene Dumas, the first of its scale to be mounted in the United States, is organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in association with The Museum of Modern Art.
One of the top-selling female artists in the world, Marlene Dumas is a young painter whose works deal with the cycle of life as well as issues of gender, sexuality, pleasure, and pain. This is an intimate look at her life—and the intellectual, ethical, and moral questions that stimulate and absorb her—as well as a comprehensive catalog of her drawings and paintings. Essays by prominent South African artists and her curator shed light on Dumas as a person as well as her creative work and its perception in the art world.
