Nicolas Poussin was a French painter in the classical style.

Nicolas Poussin was a French painter in the classical style. Until the 20th century he remained the dominant inspiration for such classically oriented artists as Jacques-Louis David and Paul Cézanne. Nicolas Poussin's early biographer was his friend Giovanni Pietro Bellori, who relates that Poussin was born near Les Andelys in Normandy and that he received an education that included some Latin, which would stand him in good stead. Early sketches attracted the notice of Quentin Varin, a local painter, whose pupil Poussin became, until he ran away to Paris at the age of eighteen.

Nicolas Poussin spent a most of his productive artistic career in Rome and over half of his life in the ancient city. Though Poussin was a known, practicing artist before he spent any time in Rome, it has been said that his successful artistic career actually began with his arrival in the city. For Ingres, for instance, Poussin was a model of classical composition, surpassed only by Raphael and the Antique; Degas saw in him ‘purity of drawing, breadth of modeling, and grandeur of composition’; Cézanne aimed at revivifying Poussin’s formal perfection by a renewed contact with nature; and the early Cubists saw in him the near-abstract qualities which they themselves sought.

A French classical painter, Nicolas Poussin has been an inspiration for countless number of great artists since the 17th century. At the age of 18, Poussin ran away from his hometown in Normandy, France, to Paris and began studying in the studios of the Flemish painters Ferdinand Elle and George Lallemand, who later became famous as the teachers of the great Nicolas Poussin

This richly illustrated study of Nicolas Poussin, a great master of the 17th century, accompanies the jointly held exhibition at Grand Palais, Paris (27 September to 2 January 1995), and The Royal Academy, London (19 January to 9 April 1995). The authors present a detailed visual study of 30 paintings, complemented by thematic analysis and including a full chronology, a general bibliography, a complete listing of the museums and collections which contain Poussin's work, and a choice or critical writings ranging from the painter's contemporaries through to the present day. This work is intended both as an exhibition guide and as an independent volume.
