In all fairness, I have not read this book, but I have seen the amazingly detailed and breath taking artwork he has done. I'm impressed by all the fame with Presidents, the Pope and celebrities who he has met. However, I cannot truly appreciate his work because I cannot get past my childhood memories when he was my eighth grade earth science teacher in Houston, Texas in the 1970s before he was pursued art as a profession. As a quiet, geeky unpopular insecure pre adolescent with a low self esteem, I dreaded going to his classes and that's when my panic attacks started. I made good grades and was well liked by other teachers and never could understand why he wasn't that nice to me. He seemed nicer to the outgoing popular crowd which I was not a part of. Funny how painful childhood memories can still haunt a person. I am in my 50s now working as a RN. I'm sure he had positive influences on other students. I was and still am a Christian and respected him for taking a risk in sharing his faith with the class, but his berating attitude towards me was confusing. I know every Christian ( myself included) have our flaws and don't want to disparage the man. It's just interesting the way things turn out years down the road and what memories are triggered when I see his artwork. I wish him the best in using his God given talent to God's glory.
I would have rated this one much higher if there were some fantasy involved and not so many small images.
Sometimes you think your looking at a photograph when it's actually an oil painting which, quite frankly, it's an amazing accomplishment. The only problem is that, in some of those cases, the theme is just a common landscape with nothing remarkable about it. So you end up with an amazingly accurate painting of an ordinary everyday scene.
