Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guóhuà (simplified Chinese: 国画; traditional Chinese: 國畫), meaning "national" or "native painting", as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used.

Chinese traditional painting is highly regarded throughout the world for its theory, expression, and techniques. According to the means of expression, Chinese painting can be divided into two categories: the freehand( xieyi 写意) school and the meticulous ( gongbi 笔) school. The xieyi school is marked by exaggerated forms and freehand brush work. History Chinese traditional painting dates back to the Neolithic Period(新石器时代) about six thousand years ago. The colored pottery with painted animals, fish, deer, and frogs excavated in the 1920 s indicate that during the Neolithic Period the Chinese had already started to use brushes to paint.
