Richard Wentworth CBE (born 1947) is a British artist, curator and teacher. Wentworth was born in Samoa-then a province of New Zealand-in 1947. He studied art at Hornsey College of Art in North London from 1965, and then at the Royal College of Art where he was a contemporary of Zoë Wanamaker and Tony Scott. Between 1971 and 1987, Wentworth taught at Goldsmiths College and his influence has been claimed in the work of the Young British Artists

Curator Simon Groom has observed that the objects Wentworth brings together provoke a form of ‘displacemen. esulting in an estrangement that makes us look at familiar things through new eyes’ (Simon Groom, ‘In Medias Res’, in Tate Liverpool 2005, . 3). The objects used in Cumulus feature in a number of contemporaneous works by Wentworth. Although Wentworth has claimed, ‘I rather object to the fact that I title at all’ (Richard Wentworth and Mark Lythgoe, ‘The Prehistoric Smile’, in Tate Liverpool 2005, . 3), the title of Cumulus – in referring to the technical term for a low-lying cloud – offers an apt metaphorical description of the ceramic plates.

Richard Wentworth (. 947) Maybe because he was the oldest of the artist-curators, Wentworth’s artefacts stretched back the earliest, to before the War, with works from the late 1930s like sculptures by Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson and Edward Paolozzi. His theme seemed to be the experience of war – with Paul Nash’s painting of the Battle of Britain and Bert Hardy’s b&w photos of the Blitz – carrying on into the post-war recovery period, through to the Festival of Britain (1951).

Born in Samoa in 1947, Richard Wentworth first came to prominence in the late 1970s along with a generation of artists whose work came to be known as New British Sculpture. By concentrating on the overlooked, and transforming and manipulating industrial or found objects into works of art, Wentworth both subverts their original function and challenges existing systems of classification. Playful, often fantastic, all his work reveals an acute intelligence allied to an irreverent and mischievous sense of humor. Leading authors from the fields of visual arts, psychology, and linguistics examine Wentworth's interest in language, visual perception, and memory and explore his role in the history of British and international art over the last three decades.
