The Works of Patrick O’Brian.

The Works of Patrick O’Brian. SINCE this life of Picasso was written several other books have appeared, some on particular aspects of his work, some on the artist as a man; but none has raised such an outcry as Arianna Stassinopoulos Huffington’s Picasso, Creator and Destroyer (Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1988), nor has any been more strongly condemned since Françoise Gilot published her Life with Picasso. For my part I felt the general indignation very strongly and I had hoped that the timely re-issue of this book would allow me to utter a counterblast to Huffington in the form of a preface.

Married?", included in the book Patrick O'Brian: Critical Appreciations and a Bibliography (1994) that: "Some time after the blitz had died away I joined one of those intelligence organisations that flourished during the War, perpetually changing their initials and competing with one another. Our work had to do with France, and more than that I shall not say, since disclosing methods and stratagems that have deceived the enemy once and that may deceive him again seems to me foolish.

Patrick O’Brian Picasso: A Biography. As for the traditional Catholicism in which he was brought up, a most significant aspect of Picasso’s relationship to it is his silence. Apart from such set-pieces of his boyhood as The First Communion and The Old Woman Receiving Holy Oil from a Choirboy, some adolescent Biblical scenes (including a fine Flight into Egypt ) and a few imprecise hagiographical pictures, he produced almost nothing with an evident religious bearing until the Crucifixion drawings of 1927, his strange Calvary of 1930, and the 1932 drawing based.

A scholarly, passionate and brilliantly-written biography of Pablo Picasso by Patrick O'Brian, the famous author of the much-loved Aubrey-Maturin series, reissued in a stunning new cover. Patrick O'Brian's outstanding biography of Picasso explores comprehensively the life of this awe-inspiring artist. Enormously productive and hugely successful, Picasso continues to attract avid, insatiable public interest. O'Brian was a close friend and a neighbour of Picasso's, and the book reflects the closeness of their friendship and the immense erudition and warm wit of Patrick O'Brian. The man that emerges from the pages is full of contradictions: hard yet tender, mean yet generous, affectionate but cold, professing communism but retaining an essentially Catholic mentality, private despite his relish of fame. Critically, O'Brian's is the only biography to fully appreciate the distinctly Mediterranean origins of Picasso's character and art. Sex and money, eating and drinking, friends and quarrels, comedies and tragedies, suicides and wars tumble over each other in the vast chaos of Picasso's experience, He was `a man almost as lonely as the sun, but one who glowed with much the same fierce, burning life.'

Simple fellow
At some point, I wanted more about Picasso's life and fewer interpretations of his work. the author did a great job detailing the early years, explaining the different "phases" he went through as well as his involvement with his many artistic friends. Yet, the later years were rushed, and I felt that i really didn't want long interpretations and explanations of the art so much as I wanted to know more about the man. As a Chicagoan, I was also disappointed that he never even mentioned how and why Picasso donated his great sculpture to the city. But, for an understanding of the man, this book seems to be the best out there.
The Rollers of Vildar
All biographies should be written like this. O'Brian is a master storeyteller and he brings this skill to this wonderful Bio. You really feel like you understand the Spanish and catalan soil from which Picasso sprung and he manages to gives much detail without being boring or pedantic. His discussion of the art is informative, interesting and not pedantic. A great read, even though long enough. If you are interested in Picasso, read this biography by one of the best writers of the 20th century, who also knew the artist personally.

A very detailed but slow moving story. That's not to my taste in biographies. Without footnotes but has a bit of an academic style. If the subject matter appeals then you might try it.

Great insight into his personality and great talent, glad to find out some bad comments by several authors were fabricated by jealousy people, wanting money from him usually. Good book!
A long read but Patrick O'Brien has such a way with words. I read all of his sea faring novels, some of them more than once. He makes Picasso's life real. I lived in Paris in the early 60's and I feel as if the places I frequented are where Picasso walked.
