This includes types of Japanese artwork, including swords. I am mainly interested in Japanese woodblock prints but found the book to be useful in tracking signatures and other kanji on prints. Generally, interesting in how it reflects Japanese culture.

Any one interested in Japanese arts, knows how difficult it is to translate the signatures of the various craftsmen. This Book, is probably the best there is, on this subject.

The printing quality of this re-print is poor. It looks and feels like an average photocopy that has been poorly scanned and bound. The paper quality is cheap. Even the glue used to bind this book is cheap and nasty. The cheap quality, however, is not reflected in the price that the publisher has placed on the back cover of this book as US$50.00

As a general guide to reading and deciphering a Japanese signature this can be a useful work. However a copy of the contents page would have been useful before committing to buying. Above all what this book lacks is a list of painter's and calligrapher's names and signatures. The catalog of artist and craftsman names (part 7 of the book) is limited to Swardsmiths, Metal workers, Lacquer artists, and Netsuke carvers. The book and bibliography omit any mention of painters and calligraphers, not exactly an acceptable lacunae for a book titled: Japanese Art Signatures.
