Best dictionary on design since the late 19th century. The author is called a modern-day Diderot by MoMA departmental curator in his Introduction.

Had to return it. Recipient had one already and I couldn't give it to another since the book has been updated since the copyright of this edition

When I first received this, I fanned through it and was disappointed. I was expecting to see huge glossy photographs of fantastic works of art and all I could see was a whole lot of text. I set it aside. Later, I opened it again and this time I went through it more slowly. I was wrong. The images are smaller than I had anticipated but the book is filled with them and the text is informative. It's a great, good quality, well presented reference book. I'm glad to have it on my bookshelf.

I used to go to the seasonal Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modern sales at Sotheby's and Christies in the 1980's. I have been to design schools as well. My title says it all, it's a darn good reference book if you are studying up on different designers. Go to a library or book store and browse through it if you are unsure you can afford it, before you can plunk the money down to have it.

Keep on designing. Carry on.

Bottom line; This is a good reference if you need to look up a particular designer.

This is a marvellous work of reference: there is a large number of well-illustrated entries on individuals and institutions that have played an important part in 'design' (applied arts, and architecture and other arts when in a close relationship to the applied arts) for the past one and a half century. If this kind of thing interests you, this encyclopedia is a must. But it is also a pleasure to browse, and find out that those chairs and lampshades and I don't know what that you have seen so often and taken for granted are the product of some individual's creativity. This book can open your eyes to the wealth of design that is not only in museums but everywhere around you.

A top notch guide to the world of design.
