Humphrey Ocean RA (born 22 June 1951) is a contemporary British painter and Royal Academy Professor of Perspective. Humphrey Ocean was born Humphrey Anthony Erdeswick Butler-Bowdon, on 22 June 1951 in Sussex, England. He went to Ampleforth College and then spent two years at Tunbridge Wells School of Art, going on to do a Foundation Course at Brighton College of Art and DipAD Painting at Canterbury College of Art.

Humphrey Ocean is a painter with a long association with the National Portrait Gallery. In 1982 he won the Gallery's annual Portrait Prize with the painting Lord Volvo and his Estate, and has undertaken several commissions for the Gallery, including Sir Paul McCartney (1983) and Philip Larkin (1984). In 1999, he collaborated with the Gallery on the exhibition The Painter's Eye. Ocean was elected Royal Academician in 2004. Portraiture has retained an important place in Ocean's diverse output but has, in recent years, reasserted itself as a focus

It was at Canterbury that he was taught by Ian Dury, then a painter. Humphrey Ocean studied at Canterbury College of Art from 1970 to 1973. During that time, he played bass with Kilburn and the Highroads, who supported The Who on their 1973 Christmas Tour. His first major solo exhibition in 1984 at the National Portrait Gallery, London was followed by shows at Tate Liverpool, Whitechapel Gallery, London and, in 2003, how’s my driving at Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. His series of new portraits, A handbook of modern life, was shown in 2013 at the National Portrait Gallery, and in 2018 he had an exhibition of sculpture and works on paper, I’ve No Idea Either,.

Humphrey Ocean was born Humphrey Anthony Erdeswick Butler-Bowdon, on 22 June 1951 in Sussex, England, and went to art schools in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton and Canterbury. From 1971 he was bass player with the Pub rock band Kilburn and the High Roads, which opened for The Who on its Christmas tour in 1973. In 1983, Ocean painted Paul McCartney's portrait and the following year he painted the poet Philip Larkin's portrait for the National Portrait Gallery, a work described by the novelist Nick Hornby as "unanswerable".
