With Richard Hollis's Concise History of Graphic Design, Meggs's book has continued to serve as a primary text for reference and teaching. This article considers the intellectual foundations of Meggs's and Hollis's approach by reflecting on the way each author models the fundamental elements of their study: scope and concepts of history, ideas of the designer and the definition of graphic design.

The story of graphic design is one of the most exciting and most important in the history of 20th-century visual culture. Created to inform, identify and promote, graphic design has evolved from its roots in the development of printing to become a profession and a discipline in its own right. This documentary history encompasses a vast range of media: printed posters; brochures and magazines; film, television and video; corporate identity. Reproduction techniques are fully treated, including lithography, photomontage, airbrushing, photography and computer-generated images.

All the books from this Thames and Hudson's collection are a great investment. For this in particular, the only thing I would like to see was more bigger colour images. Nevertheless the content is very comprehensive.

I bought this book for a Graphic Design History Class, and while it gets the job done in an informative sense, it is a rather unimpressive book in my personal opinion. The body copy is incredibly dense, and the illustrations are tiny and save for a few sections, in black and white, which sort of diminishes the impact. I honestly would have rather paid more for a larger textbook with larger, full color illustrations.
It does get the job done as a textbook, but I'd kind of expect more from a textbook that is on Graphic Design.

Unless you are interested in the opinions of the author, the book is not worth the purchase price. Why? Illustrations. There are but a handful of color illustrations and the majority of all the illustrations are smaller than 1" x 1.5". Save the pennies and buy a history with illustrations that are in color and can be seen.
Coron
for design students. The book gives a complete analysis of the graphic design's history.

Incredibly dense and really poorly designed.
Don't buy this book.
