This book gives the beginning artist the background in this medium in a way that is understandable for everyone. Whether you're a professional of just a starting amateur, this is a book that you can use. It's well written by an experienced professional pastelist and includes lots of pictures and illustrations to help you be a better pastelist. I also have Colored Pencil for the Serious Beginner by Bet Borgeson. I recommend that one, too! There are quite a few differences in the use of pastels vs. colored pencil so the two books make for a good set. Also, the discussions of art principles is presented slightly differently.

This book was at least as useful (maybe more so) for its general lessons about drawing and painting as for its pastel-specific instruction. The instruction on pastel is probably more useful for someone who is an advanced beginner in pastel, rather than a true novice. The book was even more useful now because after an eight-year hiatus I have been doing pastel painting again, and more of it than previously, so I can apply the pastel-specific lessons.

Readers are shown how to create illusions of form, volume, and space, and how to avoid overworking a picture by learning to see when it's finished. She concludes with an insightful discussion on personal style and becoming a professional artist.

This book is exactly what the title describes. Lots of basic information on art principles that apply to any medium, not just pastels. It is presented in a clear and logical format that makes it easy for a beginner to understand and use. Information on pastels is also perfect for someone who is new to the medium. There is enough here to last the serious beginner for a good amount of time, but not so much that you become overwhelmed. Wonderful book.
I also have Colored Pencil for the Serious Beginner by Bet Borgeson. I recommend that one, too! There are quite a few differences in the use of pastels vs. colored pencil so the two books make for a good set. Also, the discussions of art principles is presented slightly differently. Reading them both reinforced and clarified those principles in my mind.

Lots of good information and tips for using pastels. The illustrations and step by step activities were very helpful. The beginning information on supplies is very valuable.

Knowing what type of tools you need and the best types of paper make starting to work with pastels much more enjoyable.

Interesting. I always find something to enjoy in a book. The color palette was on the dark side but for my students it is a good way for students to see pastels used. It is a good book to have in a classroom but for my tastes it was not the greatest pastel book.

I was fortunate to have a week-end workshop with Larry 6 years ago so just had to have his book. It is very informative with
excellent demonstrations in still life, landscape and portraiture.

I am a watercolorist and I recently began working with pastels. I wanted a book that would help me choose materials, as well as demonstrate techniques I could use in getting started in this medium. I found this book useless. I wish I hadn't bought it. The organization, the lack of demonstrations, and the general visual quality of the book was not inviting. Very disappointing. Go with something else.
I have used this book now for 2 years and have found it a great help. My first really wonderful painting I did was from this book. I found this book great because it had beautiful paintings that I would want to copy and for the beginner copying others work is usually where you start. The fundamentals on how to use the pastels for different backgrounds is also very good. I hilly recommend this book.
