Artist Alison Wilson published Drawing and Painting Horses a few years ago as a reference guide for professionals. I still think it’s one of the better books on this subject and the writing style is superb. The two primary mediums he covers are drawing(graphite) and oil painting. Right off the bat I should say this book is pretty old. It dates back to the early ‘90s and hasn’t been updated since. But Draw Horses With Sam Savitt is still a very practical guide to understanding horse anatomy and drawing techniques. It’s only about 100 pages long but the tips and techniques are priceless.

I had "How to Draw Horses" by Walter Foster but it became obvious I needed more in depth instruction. Draw Horses with Sam Savitt" was the answer. He explains every step how to draw horses with basic rectangles, cylinders and boxes as guidelines. Horses have always been a part of my life. When I decided to do an oil painting of fighting wild stallions with a herd of mares, I was a bit overwhelmed. My instructor and the students said I was taking on a big challenge. They warned me "Horses are extremely difficult to draw". With the help of this book, I have a fabulous 22"x30" oil painting, and everyone who doubted agrees.

I had always admired his drawings in my horse books, so had to have this book. My project at the moment is to draw my horse on my barn ---- I figured Sam could help me get it right. To all the little & big girls out there who love horses this is a very helpful book if you draw or want to learn how to draw these wonderful animals. It's a hard book to find, so glad it's on Amazon.

Great book for the beginners and the advanced. For young artists, Savitt sometimes uses large words and is a bit picky with some drawing styles that may not be seen by a young eye. I love the book, the text is easy to read and most of the diagrams are easy to understand. Stick with this book and you'll be drawing pro horses in no time! *Ordered Used copy, received hard cover w/ dustjacket. Minor staining on back of dustjacked, other than that the book is mint.
