James Wines: Even as a child, I was very aware of Wright as the generator of really different kinds of buildings. I was born and lived in Oak Park until my first year of high school.

Inventor of the concept of de-architecture , James Wines conceives a type of architecture where the building is not an end to itself but a material shaped by the designer. His structures do not bring any functional changes to the buildings, but tend – in their style – to cause a psychological shock on the passerby. Wines roots his ideas on all the local data he can recover: how the buildings were first built, their orientation and the flora and fauna surrounding them. In 1987, his book De-Architecture was released by Rizzoli International Publications. There have been twenty two monographic books museum catalogues have published his drawings, models and built works for SITE. In total, Wines has designed more than 150 projects for private and municipal clients in eleven countries.

James Wines (born 1932) is an American artist and architect associated . He has won twenty-five writing and design awards including the 1995 Chrysler Design Award.
